The project is divided into two phases.
The “Londo mo tambula” (“Get up and walk” in sango) project began in 2016: it involved the construction of a new building connected to the existing one where a surgical unit is being built (phase 1).
Given the dramatic political situation in which the country was, the construction of a surgical unit in Niem became indispensable in order to welcome and take care of patients in the north-west of the country, avoiding them to travel kilometres, often on foot, to reach the city hospital.
Once the construction of the structure had been completed and after the training of the staff, phase 2 could begin: the support of surgical unit activity.
